Cutouts, Mooncussers & other tales from The Outer Cape

The debut solo showing by Jak Ritger brings together the Boston-based artist & writer’s practice of deep research, site-specific installation, photography and moving image. Local legends and personal histories serve as a raw material for a new body of work spanning above, below and in-between Hammock’s historic architecture with video projection, collage and for the first time on view, paintings by the artist. “Cutouts..” constructs a land-bridge to the unconscious by recombining material past and tracing a path the spirit takes after passing on. The show surfaces evidence of a wild and eldritch Cape washed ashore by the midnight tide.

Jak Ritger’s conceptual approach to photography and site-specific installation has been exhibited as part of group shows in Boston’s South End, Fall River Museum of Contemporary Art, Alabama Contemporary Art Center, The Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art in Warsaw, Poland, Le Commun in Geneva, Switzerland and Pharmakon Gallery in Bucharest, Romania. In 2022, he took up residency at lower_cavity in Holyoke, Massachusetts and presented a transmedia project titled “COLLIDER”. His work explores a wide range of themes including technological impact, para-history, outsider art, the natural world, digital culture and political activism to name a few. Writing is a central component of his practice, and he has published in several online journals and print magazines: NEW MODELS, Do Not Research, PostPostPost, The Hmm NL, Paradigm Trilogy II, Kaleidoscope Mag, King Kong Mag & Dazed Digital. In 2025, he wrote a piece for Ocula Magazine covering the New England art scene that showcased Hammock Gallery.
